Visionary Project: GP Osterhas Road Classic
The Škoda Swiss Bike Cup will kick off the upcoming season with a surprising addition: alongside five international mountain bike races, the calendar will now include a national road cycling criterium. By incorporating the long-established GP Osterhas, the organizers are launching an ambitious pilot project, expanding the Swiss Bike Cup’s proven concept and event portfolio. This marks a significant enhancement of the cycling platform, particularly in youth development.
"Strong Shift Towards Early Professionalization"
Swiss Bike Cup project leader Dimitri Isler is confident that young athletes will benefit greatly from this unique fusion. “The Swiss Bike Cup has fostered and shaped the careers of numerous successful cyclists across various disciplines. Right now, we’re witnessing a strong trend in cycling towards early professionalization, which requires a versatile foundation in all disciplines. That’s why we’re broadening the Swiss Bike Cup’s scope and integrating the established structures of the GP Osterhas. We see great potential in this forward-looking collaboration, creating and utilizing synergies.”
Successful Mountain Bikers at GP Osterhas
The GP Osterhas, scheduled for April 19, 2025, will celebrate its 44th edition. Mountain bike stars have a long history of participating in the event. Thomas Frischknecht, Olympic silver medalist in Atlanta 1996, placed second in 2004. Ralph Näf, team manager and owner of Thömus maxon, won the GP Osterhas in 2008. Just last year, Alessandra Keller, the current XCO World Cup overall winner participated in Affoltern am Albis.
“For the past 43 editions of the GP Osterhas, we’ve always had a strong presence of mountain bikers,” said René Graf, GP Osterhas organizing committee president. “That’s why this collaboration with the Swiss Bike Cup makes perfect sense. There’s no other national series that integrates two different cycling disciplines. I see this project as an exciting challenge and an opportunity to advance the sport as a whole.”
